{"id":410254,"date":"2017-08-08T08:10:35","date_gmt":"2017-08-08T08:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/08\/08\/google-fires-diversity-memo-author\/"},"modified":"2017-08-08T08:10:35","modified_gmt":"2017-08-08T08:10:35","slug":"google-fires-diversity-memo-author","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/08\/08\/google-fires-diversity-memo-author\/","title":{"rendered":"Google fires diversity memo author"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\">&#13;<br \/>\n                <\/aside>\n<p><!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 3.4.4--><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A Google employee who wrote a controversial memo about workplace diversity has been fired, the BBC can confirm.<\/p>\n<p>The controversial memo broke the firm\u2019s code of conduct, Google\u2019s chief executive Sundar Pichai said on Monday in an email to employees.<\/p>\n<p>The memo, shared widely at the weekend, suggested there were fewer women at Google due to biological differences.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pichai said the text crossed the line due to it \u201cadvancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled Google\u2019s Ideological Echo Chamber, the paper argued that \u201cthe abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don\u2019t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The author wrote: \u201cWe need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google has not confirmed who the employee is, but US media reports name him as James Damore.<\/p>\n<p>The memo was quickly criticised by Google\u2019s head of diversity, Danielle Brown, but the author \u2013 whose identity has not been revealed by Google \u2013 later wrote that he had received \u201cmany personal messages from fellow Googlers expressing their gratitude\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Comments \u2018not OK\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In his note to staff sent on Monday afternoon, Mr Pichai spoke at length about protecting free speech in Google\u2019s ranks, and that \u201cmuch of what was in that memo is fair to debate, regardless of whether a vast majority of Googlers disagree with it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But he added: \u201cTo suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is contrary to our basic values and our Code of Conduct, which expects \u2018each Googler to do their utmost to create a workplace culture that is free of harassment, intimidation, bias and unlawful discrimination\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a style=\"display:none\" rel=\"follow\" href=\"http:\/\/megatheme.ir\/\" title=\"\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633\">\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#13; A Google employee who wrote a controversial memo about workplace diversity has been fired, the BBC can confirm.
