{"id":408684,"date":"2017-08-03T11:16:35","date_gmt":"2017-08-03T11:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/08\/03\/govt-promises-to-make-ghana-west-africas-pharmaceutical-hub\/"},"modified":"2017-08-03T11:16:35","modified_gmt":"2017-08-03T11:16:35","slug":"govt-promises-to-make-ghana-west-africas-pharmaceutical-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/08\/03\/govt-promises-to-make-ghana-west-africas-pharmaceutical-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t promises to make Ghana West Africa\u2019s pharmaceutical hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The government says it is taking steps to re-position Ghana as a pharmaceutical hub in West Africa sub-region.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative involves stimulus package for viable but distressed pharmaceutical and other companies.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo, says companies will also enjoy custom duty exemption on all raw and packaging materials for local production.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1002554\/Myjoyonline.com_InArticle_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p>According to the Senior Minister, the government is in talks with stakeholders to exempt the pharmaceutical industry from Value Added Tax on inputs.<\/p>\n<p>Discussions are on-going with ECOWAS neighbours to allow smooth transit of pharmaceutical products.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Maafo says the measures are in line with government&#8217;s vision to make Ghana a sub-regional pharmaceutical giant.<\/p>\n<p>He was addressing Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana\u2019s conference opening in Kumasi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment is taking pragmatic steps to re-position and revitalize the pharmaceutical sector through series of targeted policies, interventions and initiatives. Stimulus packages for viable but distressed companies including some selected pharmaceutical firms; two, exemptions from payment of customs duty on all raw materials and packaging materials for the local production of pharmaceutical products,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Maafo is encouraging local pharmaceutical companies to take advantage of West Africa\u2019s over 350 million people as a potential market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ECOWAS market has 350 million people. Products from this country of ours are highly respected and accepted within the ECOWAS, to say the least.
