{"id":407246,"date":"2017-07-31T07:10:33","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T07:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/07\/31\/kenya-police-kill-attacker-at-vps-home\/"},"modified":"2017-07-31T07:10:33","modified_gmt":"2017-07-31T07:10:33","slug":"kenya-police-kill-attacker-at-vps-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/07\/31\/kenya-police-kill-attacker-at-vps-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya police kill attacker at VP&#8217;s home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"530\" height=\"298\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/3439413558432_7075392957931.jpg.pagespeed.ce.AklEnPZ8tO.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"police\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"3678290441\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Kenyan police say they have shot dead an attacker who forced his way into the rural home of Kenya\u2019s Deputy President William Ruto, ending a siege that lasted several hours.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ruto and his family were not at the compound near the western city of Eldoret at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The man had entered the residence after injuring a police guard with a machete and stealing his gun, police said.<\/p>\n<p>The incident comes days before Kenya holds presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>Police chief Joseph Boinnet told local media the situation was now \u201cunder control\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no threat now because he was the only one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace responsive-image__img\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/_97123408_mediaitem97123407.jpg\" alt=\"William Ruto\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"4165239240\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There were no further details about the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier reports suggested a number of gunmen had entered Mr Ruto\u2019s home, but police later clarified there was only one attacker.There have been conflicting reports about how many guns the attacker used.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Boinnet told Capital FM News that only one firearm, belonging to the security guard, had been recovered from the gunman.<\/p>\n<p>However, Rift Valley Regional Co-ordinator Wanyama Musiambo told reporters the attacker had used a number of guns after breaking into a police armoury in the compound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the exchange of fire we thought it was more than one attacker, because he used different firearms,\u201d he said in quotes carried by Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the operation we discovered that it was one gunman, but because he was inside there, he could change positions and firearms because he had access to the guns. And the guns he was using were ours,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace responsive-image__img\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/_97124156_mediaitem97124155.jpg\" alt=\"Ruto's home in Sugoi\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"1135466824\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The deputy president had left the home hours before the attack, heading to a campaign rally in the town of Kitale with President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kenyatta is seeking re-election on 8 August.
