{"id":402143,"date":"2017-07-17T15:01:25","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T15:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/07\/17\/mandela-ambulance-caught-fire-surgeon-reveals\/"},"modified":"2017-07-17T15:01:25","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T15:01:25","slug":"mandela-ambulance-caught-fire-surgeon-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/07\/17\/mandela-ambulance-caught-fire-surgeon-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandela ambulance &#8216;caught fire&#8217; &#8211; Surgeon reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/images.jpg.pagespeed.ce.Jzplf2KbLg.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Nelson Mandela\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"312979195\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/><\/div>\n<p>An ambulance carrying South Africa\u2019s first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela caught fire as it was rushing him to hospital, his doctor revealed in a book published on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The incident is one of several bizarre episodes contained in the book chronicling Mandela\u2019s final years by Vejay Ramlakan, who was South Africa\u2019s surgeon general and the former president\u2019s physician until his death in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Ramlakan was accompanying Mandela from his Johannesburg home to a specialist heart hospital in Pretoria in June 2013 when smoke began billowing from the ambulance carrying the former liberation leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA pall of black smoke enveloped the ambulance as it slowed to a halt in the fast lane of the freeway,\u201d Ramlakan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lifted my focus from the section of road in the headlights to glance ahead and saw what appeared to be a vehicle on fire\u2026. This was awful. Madiba in an ambulance on fire,\u201d added Ramlakan, using Mandela\u2019s clan name.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fears of Mandela\u2019s medical team, their patient was unharmed and after 30 minutes was transferred to a backup ambulance to complete the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Ramlakan also revealed that shortly after Mandela\u2019s death at the age of 95 in December 2013 following a prolonged respiratory infection, a spy camera was found in the morgue where his body was held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this a symptom of the lunacy of persons whose unfettered curiosity was most barbaric,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, three spy cameras filming the Mandela household and family cemetery were also discovered near Qunu, Mandela\u2019s birth village in South Africa\u2019s Eastern Cape region, 450 kilometres (280 miles) southwest of Durban, Ramlakan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The book \u201cMandela\u2019s Last Years\u201d was released ahead of Mandela Day on Tuesday, an annual day to honour his memory.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a style=\"display:none\" rel=\"follow\" href=\"http:\/\/megatheme.ir\/\" title=\"\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633\">\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0628 \u0648\u0631\u062f\u067e\u0631\u0633<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An ambulance carrying South Africa\u2019s first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela caught fire as it was rushing him to hospital, his doctor revealed in a book published on Monday.
