But there are certain conversations every couple should have before swearing \u2019til death do them part.\u00a0Relationship expert\u00a0Tara Caffelle says these are the 10 chats\u00a0<strong>all\u00a0<\/strong>couples need to have before their big day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>1) Money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Explore together what your expectations are of money, your uses for it, how you like to save and spend. No answers are wrong, but it\u2019s important to avoid surprises (and also conflict) down the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>2) Sex<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">The only time that sex becomes an issue in a relationship is when there are differing expectations about how much of it is being had\u2026 or isn\u2019t. The important thing is to talk about how much of it is normal in your relationship and if you\u2019re on the same page, even if it\u2019s significantly more or less than is \u201cexpected,\u201d you\u2019re fine. But please have the discussion, because\u00a0sex\u00a0waxes and wanes in a long-term relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>3) Love languages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Discuss how each of you gives and receives love. If there is a difference \u2013 and there\u00a0<em>is\u00a0<\/em>likely to be \u2013 it can create a feeling of not being loved when it\u2019s not given to you in the way or\u00a0love language\u00a0you \u201cspeak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>4) Intimacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Beyond sex, intimacy is the real foundation of a\u00a0successful relationship. Explore what you\u2019d like together, and how you would like to build on what you have. This is the vulnerable stuff, and it may take some bravery to open up. If you\u2019re both willing to deepen your connection, your relationship will only continue to bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>5) The future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">What are your goals and visions? How might you support one another in going after them? It\u2019s ok to have very different paths ahead, and it\u2019s important to identify commonalities and areas you can work at\u00a0<strong>as a team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>6) Children<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">With more people choosing to\u00a0not have children, this is a topic that\u2019s no longer a foregone conclusion when a couple marries. Talk about your expectations around when, and if, you\u2019ll start a family, how you would approach raising your kids, and what sort of home you would like to build around them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>7) Expectations for family relationships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Getting married means you\u2019re blending two families, along with their traditions, expectations and dynamics, so it\u2019s important to talk about this ahead of time. Define how your new family will celebrate holidays and how you will choose to spend that time. Recognise that you are now a team and a family unit of your own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>8) Fidelity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">This is a\u00a0<em>really<\/em>\u00a0important topic, even if a couple agrees that they\u2019ll be\u00a0monogamous, there may be varying ideas about what that\u00a0<em>actually<\/em>\u00a0looks like. Is one partner expecting that their spouse will never again speak to a member of the opposite sex, or is it ok to kiss old friends when meeting them after a long time? Talk about this beforehand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>9) Fighting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">There\u00a0<strong>will<\/strong>\u00a0be conflict in any relationship, it\u2019s natural. If there isn\u2019t, then the people in the relationship are perhaps not entirely engaged in it. With this inevitability, it\u2019ll serve you well to talk about how you each approach conflict. This means designing how you\u2019ll approach conflict and deciding on some strategies to employ while you\u2019re still in agreement that work for you. For instance, it doesn\u2019t work for all couples to resolve their conflicts in order to \u201cnot go to bed angry\u201d; sometimes you won\u2019t be able to address it all before bed, and will have to agree to continue your discussions in the morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-h2\"><strong>10) End of life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">This should be an ongoing discussion, but it\u2019s really never too early to learn about your partner\u2019s preferences for care if they were very ill.
