Trump<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nTwo TV presenters attacked on Twitter by President Donald Trump have accused him of lying and suggested the White House tried to blackmail them.<\/p>\n
The hosts of MSNBC Morning Joe said they were warned a tabloid would run a negative story on them unless they said sorry for their coverage of Mr Trump.<\/p>\n
Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough said Mr Trump\u2019s tweets were full of \u201clies\u201d about them and he \u201cfears women\u201d.<\/p>\n
The president called them \u201clow IQ crazy Mika\u201d and \u201cPsycho Joe\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He also referred to Ms Brzezinski as \u201cbleeding badly from a facelift\u201d.<\/p>\n
The couple, who are engaged to be married, wrote a joint response in Friday\u2019s\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0accusing the president of an \u201cunhealthy obsession\u201d with them.<\/p>\n
They denied his claims they had spent three nights at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last New Year\u2019s Eve, or that they had \u201cinsisted\u201d, as Mr Trump claimed, on spending time with him.<\/p>\n
Instead they said they turned down his invitation to attend his New Year\u2019s Eve party.<\/p>\n
They continued: \u201cPutting aside Mr Trump\u2019s never-ending obsession with women\u2019s blood, Mika and her face were perfectly intact, as pictures from that night reveal.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd though it is no-one\u2019s business, the president\u2019s petulant personal attack against yet another woman\u2019s looks compels us to report that Mika has never had a face-lift.\u201d<\/p>\n
The TV presenters also said three White House officials had told them the National Enquirer would publish a negative article about them unless they apologised to Mr Trump for their scrutiny of him.<\/p>\n
Mr Scarborough said: \u201cThey said, \u2018if you call the president up and you apologise for your coverage then he\u2019ll pick up the phone and basically spike the story.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI had, I will just say, three people at the very top of the administration calling me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Brzezinski said reporters from the supermarket tabloid began harassing her family.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were calling my children,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were calling close friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese calls persisted for quite some time and then Joe had the conversations that he had with the White House where they said \u2018oh, this could go away\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

David Pecker, chief executive of the Enquirer\u2019s parent company, is a staunch ally of Mr Trump, which is reflected in the tabloid\u2019s coverage of the president.<\/p>\n
But in a Friday morning tweet, Mr Trump denied the couple\u2019s claims, saying Mr Scarborough \u201ccalled me to stop a National Enquirer article. I said no!\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Scarborough swiftly hit back: \u201cYet another lie. I have texts from your top aides and phone records. Also, those records show I haven\u2019t spoken with you in many months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Trump\u2019s original tweet about the MSNBC hosts provoked a storm of criticism, including even from some fellow Republicans.<\/p>\n
Senator Lindsey Graham said Mr Trump\u2019s remarks on Thursday were \u201cbeneath the office\u201d of president.<\/p>\n
He said the tweet \u201crepresents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease just stop. This isn\u2019t normal,\u201d tweeted fellow Republican Senator Ben Sasse.<\/p>\n
The Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, called Mr Trump\u2019s tweets \u201csexist, an assault on the freedom of the press & an insult to all women\u201d.<\/p>\n

The White House sprang to Mr Trump\u2019s defence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think that the president has ever been someone that gets attacked and doesn\u2019t push back,\u201d spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Fox News.<\/p>\n
In a previous spat with\u00a0journalist Megyn Kelly,\u00a0Mr Trump referred to \u201cblood coming out of her wherever\u201d, implying her work was being affected by her menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n

The Morning Joe co-presenters have increasingly attacked President Trump since he took office.<\/p>\n
In recent weeks, Mr Scarborough has called him a \u201cbumbling dope\u201d, while Ms Brzezinski has called him \u201cphony\u201d, a \u201cnarcissist\u201d and accused him of \u201cdestroying the country\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Brzezinski is the daughter of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was President Jimmy Carter\u2019s national security adviser, while Mr Scarborough is a former Republican congressman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
