Trump<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nUS President Donald Trump has launched an extraordinary attack on a female news anchor\u2019s alleged plastic surgery.<\/p>\n
He said MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski was \u201cbleeding badly from a face-lift\u201d during a visit to his Florida golf resort Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n
In a Twitter salvo, Mr Trump also assailed Brzezinski\u2019s MSNBC co-presenter Joe Scarborough.<\/p>\n
They are both his occasional sparring partners and she this week accused him of developing a \u201cdictatorship\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don\u2019t watch anymore),\u201d Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
He also accused \u201clow I.Q. Crazy Mika\u201d and \u201cPsycho Joe\u201d of \u201cinsisting on joining me\u201d at Mar-a-Lago over three days at New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Amid an outpouring of criticism from left and right, the White House rejected suggestions Mr Trump had done anything wrong.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe president has been attacked mercilessly on personal accounts by members on that programme,\u201d deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a news briefing.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think he\u2019s been very clear that when he gets attacked he\u2019s going to hit back.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe American people elected someone who\u2019s tough, who\u2019s smart and who\u2019s a fighter.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that\u2019s Donald Trump. And I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a surprise to anybody that he fights fire with fire.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brzezinksi, 50, hit back earlier by tweeting an advert for a children\u2019s cereal, with the caption, \u201cmade for small hands\u201d, an apparent reference to a taunt often directed at Mr Trump by his critics.<\/p>\n

During his presidential campaign, Mr Trump was a frequent guest on MSNBC\u2019s Morning Joe programme, which was accused by liberal voices of giving him preferential treatment.<\/p>\n
But the relationship turned sour as the presenters sharpened their scrutiny of the candidate.<\/p>\n
The pair have stepped up their attacks since Mr Trump\u2019s inauguration, deriding him as a \u201cfake president\u201d.<\/p>\n
In recent weeks, Scarborough has called Mr Trump a \u201cbumbling dope\u201d, resembling \u201ca kid who pooped in his pants\u201d, while Brzezinksi has mocked members of the administration as \u201clobotomised\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump\u2019s latest broadside comes just a month after Scarborough and Brzezinski, who are engaged to one another, told Vanity Fair magazine the president had offered to officiate at their wedding.<\/p>\n
She is the daughter of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was an aide to Presidents Carter and Johnson, while Scarborough is a former Republican congressman.<\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s quickly review all of the people who have told Donald Trump to tone down his tweets as president. His wife. His White House advisors. His lawyers. Republicans in Congress. Even his own supporters have said they think his social media fusillades are counterproductive.<\/p>\n
Yet here we are again. Another morning, another round of intensely personal Twitter invective that marks a dramatic departure from the (at least public) behaviour of past occupants of the Oval Office.<\/p>\n
That this comes as no shock may, in fact, be the biggest shock of all. Mr Trump mocked people\u2019s looks (Rosie O\u2019Donnell) as a businessman, and he was rewarded with reality television show stardom. He mocked people\u2019s looks (Carly Fiorina, Rand Paul) as a candidate, and he was rewarded with the presidency. Now he\u2019s mocking people\u2019s looks from his new home in the White House.<\/p>\n
The president has hit the hornet\u2019s nest again, and he\u2019ll be roundly condemned by media commentators and Democrats. Republican politicians will express concern, then go back to their conservative legislative efforts.<\/p>\n
This, too, will pass. As will the next round. Until the American voters \u2013 the only ones, it seems, with the real power \u2013 decide they want a change.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a level of viciousness I wasn\u2019t expecting\u201d in Washington DC, the first daughter told Fox News.<\/p>\n
Online critics have noted the president\u2019s wife, Melania Trump, expressed a desire during the election to campaign against cyber-bullying.<\/p>\n
But her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement on Thursday: \u201cAs the First Lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Democratic National Committee described Mr Trump\u2019s tweet as \u201can attack on women everywhere\u201d.\u200b<\/p>\n

Paul Ryan, the highest-ranking congressional Republican, told a weekly news conference: \u201cWe are trying to improve the tone and civility of the debate.<\/p>\n

When asked in the past to clarify Mr Trump\u2019s social media postings, White House spokesman Sean Spicer has told reporters \u201cthe president\u2019s tweets speak for themselves\u201d and they should be considered official statements.<\/p>\n
This is Mr Trump\u2019s second high-profile spat with a female news anchor.<\/p>\n
During a US election campaign debate in August 2016, Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly asked him why he had called certain women \u201cfat pigs, slobs and disgusting animals\u201d.<\/p>\n
Afterwards, Mr Trump said of Ms Kelly \u201cthere was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever\u201d.<\/p>\n\n
