{"id":396046,"date":"2017-06-16T13:06:49","date_gmt":"2017-06-16T13:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2017\/06\/16\/i-dont-support-scrapping-of-ghana-school-of-law-sophia-akuffo\/"},"modified":"2017-06-16T13:06:49","modified_gmt":"2017-06-16T13:06:49","slug":"i-dont-support-scrapping-of-ghana-school-of-law-sophia-akuffo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2017\/06\/16\/i-dont-support-scrapping-of-ghana-school-of-law-sophia-akuffo\/","title":{"rendered":"I don\u2019t support scrapping of Ghana School of Law \u2013 Sophia Akuffo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<!--               \n\n<div class=\"in-ad\">\n\n\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1495043641385-0' style='height:250px; width:300px;'>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n --><\/p>\n<p>Chief Justice nominee, Sophia Akuffo says the country\u2019s legal training will suffer if the Ghana School of Law is scrapped as being clamoured for.<\/p>\n<p>The Harvard-trained lawyer said the School provides practical legal training to students which is absent in the various faculties of law where Bachelor of Law degrees are obtained.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before Parliament\u2019s Appointments Committee Friday, the Supreme Court judge said the universities educate students academically on the law which is not sufficient to make one a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1002554\/Myjoyonline.com_InArticle_300x250 --><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/1176100892066_8537085806071.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; height:389px; width:640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ghana School of Law is a professional training facility and that is where the theories learnt in classrooms are supposed to be taught from a more practical point of view,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>There have been suggestions that the Ghana School of Law be completely scrapped for the various faculties of law to take over its functions.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the calls are borne out of the challenges of LLB holders face in getting admitted into the Law School.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/5316205079201_6659185026720.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; height:426px; width:640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The enrollment process is said to be riddled with favouritism and corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Outspoke law lecturer at the University of Ghana, Kwame Gyan in 2015 said the Law School has underserved its purpose of providing young lawyers with the requisite skills.<\/p>\n<p>He said public confidence in the School is low because of the needless bureaucracies at the school which stall academic progress.<\/p>\n<p>Founding Dean of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) Faculty of Law, Professor Kwame Frimpong also said the School cannot provide the legal needs of the country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/772708593350_8244383361242.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; height:386px; width:640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said the current situation where students will have to journey especially from Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to Accra to attend the law school is unsustainable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I think we should do is, we should scrap the Ghana School of Law which is just a school\u2026so [that] the law school will not teach courses but will be an examining body acting for and on behalf of the General Legal Council,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although she believes those arguing for\u00a0the closure of the law school have a genuine case, she said that is not the best way forward.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/4431232482712_4995508199350.JPG\" style=\"border-style:solid; border-width:5px; height:426px; width:640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not one of those who subscribe\u00a0to the Ghana School of Law being scrapped,\u201d Sophia Akuffo said, adding systems must be put in place to make it effective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we were in law school it was such a seamless transition that some of us thought the Ghana School of Law was part of the University of Ghana,\u201d she said, adding training from the school has helped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of the theory of procedure, you are doing the practice [especially]; how to draw a charge and you are taught how you are going to marshal evidence to support that charge,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She promised to improve the efficiency of the school to provide legal training that meets the needs of the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Justice nominee, Sophia Akuffo says the country\u2019s legal training will suffer if the Ghana School of Law is scrapped as being clamoured for.
