A half-hearted apology by Mahama Ayariga, the man found guilty of contempt of Parliament in the infamous bribery scandal,\u00a0threw\u00a0the House into complete chaos.<\/span><\/p>\n Some members of the House nearly exchanged fisticuffs shortly after the Speaker, Mike Ocquaye, left the chamber after attempts to get an unqualified apology from Ayariga failed.<\/span><\/p>\n “Mr Speaker if you say I should apologise, I apologise,” he said after raising an\u00a0objection to the conclusion of the Joe Ghartey Committee report which found him guilty of contempt.<\/span><\/p>\n The minority appeared satisfied with the apology, but not the majority. A number of them were incensed, cursing and throwing their fingers about in the air in anger.<\/span><\/p>\n Others shouted “by-election! by-election!” pointing to the ultimate sanction an MP could be liable to if found guilty of contempt of Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n The Speaker of Parliament\u00a0had to defer his ruling on the matter to tomorrow but that even exacerbated the confusion all the more.<\/span><\/p>\n Members from both sides converged in the middle with Sam George leading the onslaught for the Minority side.<\/span><\/p>\n But for the timely intervention of some other MPs there would have been a\u00a0fierce exchange of blows.<\/span><\/p>\n
