The Accra Regional Police Commander DCOP Osaberima Oware Asare Pinkron III has revealed that the regional command is keeping a close watch at the activities of estate developers in Accra and their security providers to curb the activities of land guards within the metropolis.
It is believed that some estate developers and chiefs recruit and use land guards for their nefarious activities.
These land guards are often provided with arms and ammunitions to guard the lands during the day and in the night some use it for robbery.
The issue of land guards and chieftaincy, according to the regional commander take 50 percent of their working time and the other 50 percent is spent on combating violent and general crime in Accra.
He said some of the regional commanders become so perplexed of the high rate of chieftaincy and land problems that they are torn between maintenance of public order and their efforts to combat general crime in the city.
The regional commander made these known at the annual get together of the Accra Regional Police Command popularly known in security cycles as West Africa Security Services Association (WASSA).
He said in the provision of peace and security, the regional command have men stationed at the Ga Mantse palace, Agbogbloshie, Ga Mashie area, Nungua Traditional Council area, Oshieyie and Kokrobitey among other places to maintain public order.
“The usual crime prevention methods are being applied to strengthen public security, and these include day and night, foot and mobile patrols, snap checks, periodic swoops and others.
He called on the Ministry of Chieftaincy And Religious Affairs to tackle the chieftaincy problems in Greater Accra to enable the police concentrate on fighting crime only.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashitey in an address said government will provide the enabling environment to support the police by equipping the service to achieve its vision of becoming a world class police service capable of delivering planned, democratic, protective and peaceful services up to standards of international best practices.
“As such, the police must be committed in encouraging security awareness of the various communities through neigbourhood watch schemes; review and improve the current police visibility arrangements by strengthening community policing; improving and build capacities of DCI Personnel in the region to sharpen their investigative skills and abilities in these days of sophisticated crimes.”
