Outgoing President John Mahama has charged his successor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to continue with his government’s uncompleted projects.
Speaking to the nation in his final State of the Nations Address Thursday, the President said Ghana would be a better place if succeeding governments complete works of previous ones.
He lauded the works of former leaders of the country which he said have improved the fortunes of the country.
“President Jerry John Rawlings started the structural transformation of this economy under the Economic Recovery Programme. This programme restored Ghana to a path of growth which he handed over to President John Agyekum Kufuor.
“President Kufuor continued the economic adjustment programme and under the HIPC initiative achieved significant debt reduction. Implementing new social intervention programmes such as NHIS and LEAP, he passed it on to President John Evans Atta Mills,” he said.
Late President Mills, he noted “commenced the Eastern Corridor road project, University of Ghana Medical Centre, which I inaugurated yesterday, the Kotokoraba market, Cape Coast stadium and host of others which I inherited and completed.”
President Mahama was confident his successor would continue with uncompleted works of his government.
“I am assured by his [Akufo-Addo] firm statements that he will continue…projects as enjoined by our constitution,” he said.
He listed the construction of new community day senior high schools, a policy of progressively free secondary education, construction of the eastern university, and investments in many infrastructure projects.
With two days for President Mahama to hand-over the incoming President, he said the verdict on his achievements would be delivered by posterity.
“I have done my part in running my lap of the [leadership] relay. What that verdict will ultimately be, I cannot say,” he said, asserting that he has done his best.
He wished his successor “success in this regard.”
“As I have said many times already, regardless of whose tenure in which these visions come to fruition, its success belongs to Ghana. They belong to all of us,” he added, receiving resounding applause from the Members of Parliament (MPs).
