Fresh MarketThe Deputy Minister revealed that drastic measures will be taken against foreign retailers

Deputy Trade Minister, Carlos Ahenkorah, says the government will be applying diplomatic means to address the influx of foreign retailers in the country.

Trade unions in the country, including the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) says the government is losing the fight against foreign retailers in the country, however, speaking to Joy News, Carlos Ahenkorah hints that government is currently in talks with foreign missions to address the issue.

He revealed that Ghana has engaged Nigeria over the issue.

Nigerians are among the largest group of foreign retailers in the country whose activities breach trade laws.

Current investment laws bar foreigners from trading in retail markets unless they bring about $1 million and employ about 20 Ghanaians.

The Deputy Minister revealed that drastic measures will be taken against foreign retailers as their illegal activities have the potential of destroying the bilateral relations between Ghana and its neighbouring countries.
