The National Identification Authority(NIA) is set to roll-out the new Ghana Card by the end of January, 2018, officials say.

This follows parliament’s recent approval of the National Identity Register Amendment Bill to reform processes for the National Identification System.

Ghana Card, is meant to be the primary ID card that citizens will use to access all services in the country, including even traveling within the West African sub-region.

It’ll be the only valid ID for application for a bank account, passport, telephone number, property acquisition, drivers license among others.

The Executive Secretary of the NIA, Prof Ken Attafuah said the smart National ID card is critical to the development of the country, insisting the Authority will hasten processes to start issuing the Smart Card.

“…Worse case scenario, early January or mid January, 2018 we’ll roll-out” he noted, saying the passage of the amending Bill was the only hurdle.

All things being equal, the impending registration exercise which is scheduled to start this November, will register all Ghanaians and foreign nationals residents in the Country.
