Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister of Finance

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has announced that preparatory works are ongoing to ensure that all government workers are enrolled onto the SNNIT biometric database before the end of the year.

Presenting government’s Mid-Year budget review in parliament, Mr. Ofori-Atta stated that the move was to prevent the workers from having their salaries suspended as was done in April 2017.

In April this year, some government workers including teachers and civil servants were denied salaries for failing to register on the SNNIT biometric scheme before the set deadline.

He explained that “preparatory works are also on going to interface the government payroll of SNNIT biometric data base as well as register the government club thirty workers on the biometric database before the end of the year”.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was hopeful the move will help reduce fraud and leakages in the payroll system.

Background

Mr. Ofori-Atta during his presentation of the 2017 budget in March this year, announced government’s commitment to clean the payroll.

This was followed by a directive from the Minister to the Controller and Accountant General on the 10th of February 2017, to inform all public servants on the Government of Ghana mechanized payroll system who had not registered on the new SSNIT biometric system to do so by the end of February 2017.

Some workers who failed to complete their registration on time had their salaries suspended but received them later after an extension of the registration time.
