The Office of the Vice President has disclosed to Citi Business News the implementation of the paperless system at the ports is on scheduled and will meet the September deadline.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia gave the directive for all agencies at the ports to roll out a paperless system by September this year to remove the numerous human interface that encouraged corruption.

Speaking to Citi Business News to ascertain how the work is ongoing, the Technical Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako assured that the deadline will be met.

He stated that the paperless system is an integral part of the government’s move to block revenue leakages and improve ‘ease of doing business’, hence an important programme.

“I was part of the quest to eliminate corruption at the ports. We held what we call the port efficiency conference that was hosted in Ghana. We invited people from Dubai and as part of that, three policy issues came to being and those policies were earmarked to take effect in September, so gradually the office of the Vice President is working closely with all the agencies that are involved,” he disclosed.

Outlining the directives, Dr. Boako stated that government wants to make the ports the best on the continent, and remove all customs road barriers as well as instructing GCNET and West Blue Consulting to go 100% paperless.

Dr. Boako stated that the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority(GPHA) which is the implementing body is working with all relevant institutions to implement the three policies.

He pointed out that with the office of the Vice President is constantly monitoring the step-by-step implementation of the policies.

“The Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority and all the agencies are to make sure that whatever decisions that were taken at the conference come to fruition in September. I have no reasons to doubt that we cannot make the deadline. The vice president has set the target for them, they must meet it,” he stressed.
