The staff of Pantang Hospital were on Wednesday joined by students of the Nursing and Midwifery Training College to protest the high rate of encroachment on the hospital’s lands.

The demonstrators walked from Pantang to Adenta and back wielding placards to register their displeasure with the act they say put their lives and that of patients at risk.

Upon their return to the hospital, they were addressed by the Director of the hospital, Dr. Frank Baning who commended them for the peaceful manner in which they organised the protest.

In an interview with Ghanaweb, he said even though he was not in favour of the demonstration he agreed that private developers should not be allowed to continue taking over the hospital’s land.

He said, “it could have been done in a better way where the agencies involved who are very much in the know of what’s going on … should have done something about this.”

He was hopeful the Minister of Health will take steps to stop private developers from putting up structures on the land.

The minister who later met with the workers assured them that the person claiming ownership of the land had agreed to halt work till further notice.

He also added that government will try hard to acquire the land for the hospital if investigations revealed that the land truly does not belong to them.

The workers agreed to go back to work on Thursday.

Patients on admission at the hospital have been left to fend for themselves since the workers began a sit-down strike on Monday whilst out-patients were been turned away.
