The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana Samson Asaaki Awingobit has called on authorities to punish persons whose actions resulted in a ban of vegetables and fruits from being exported to the China.

“For me, I think someone should be punished for not doing his or her job which has caused Ghana this embarrassment so that we don’t spend money investing and going through the export procedure only to get negative feedback.” he lamented.

Mr Awingobit appealed to government to put measures in place to avert such a situation from recurring.

“This is going to be a cost to the exporter and the farmers. This is because 70% of the products are for export. China is a big market for us so I think this issue must be looked into so that we don’t get a recurrence of such,” he said.

Ghana’s fruits and vegetables have since the beginning of the year been banned from exporting to China as it has failed to meet international production standards.

But Mr Awingobit speaking to Citi Business News says government must deal with those responsible for the acts to avoid a recurrence.

He further called on the respective ministries involved to deal with the matter quickly. “We expect both the Agriculture Ministry and Health Ministry to do something about it.”
