In a rather less impressive showing than the Mexico friendly, Ghana ended their tour of the United States with another defeat after they narrowly lost 2-1 to the Yankees in Connecticut.

Kwesi Appiah made five changes to the side which lost to Mexico with Rashid Sumaila, Jerry Akaminko, Mohammed Abu, David Accam and Asamoah Gyan handed starting berths in place of Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah, Isaac Sackey, Thomas Agyapong and Majeed Waris respectively.

The changes might have taken a toll on the team as Ghana rarely got out of first gear in the opening half of the game with the Americans slice opening the defence on countless occasions. In addition to this, a combination of poor passing and sloppiness in possession culminated in a drab Ghana display.

And the Black Stars were made to pay for their carelessness in possession with debutant Dom Dwyer scoring with an acrobatic finish after Frank Acheampong had lost the ball in his own half.

The goal might have served the impetus for Ghana to awaken from their slumber but it only dazed the team further as Appiah’s men played without any real purpose.

With the game nearing recess, Ghana was awarded a penalty for a foul on Acheampong in one of the few meaningful attacks in the half.

It was a delight to see Asamoah Gyan back on penalty duties but the joy was short-lived as he shot feebly into Brad Guzan’s path to end the half 1-0.

The Americans doubled the lead immediately after halftime with Kellyn Acosta drilling a free kick underneath the Ghana wall to give the Yankees a real cushion.

Gyan atoned for his penalty miss with an expertly converted free-kick on his own, a kick which would have got free kick experts David Beckham, Ronaldinho and Juninho Pernambucano reminiscing their past and relishing a set piece competition with the Ghana captain.

The goal was his 51st for the country.

The free kick proved to be a consolation for Ghana as Appiah and his charges suffered a second straight loss.
