The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Prof Joseph Ghartey has emphatically stated that plans are underway for the University to get school of economics soon.
According to him, the department would impact on society and would help predict the economic future of the country and even be consulted by the outside world.
The Vice Chancellor made these known when Group Ideal (GI) a financial institution donated 30 desktops, 5 laptops and 5 printers to the department of economics of the faculty of social sciences at a ceremony held on the campus.
The donation was in fulfillment of a promise the president of the Ideal Group, Dr Nii Kotey Dzani made to the department about a year ago.
Prof Ghartey stressed the need for the students to learn to give not when they are gone but even when they are in school.
He indicated that the department was doing everything possible to introduce more innovative programs to feed industry and urged the company to recruit students from the department.
“Group Ideal was manifesting itself through the presentation to the department but I call on them to also make its physical presence felt by partnering the university. Going forward we will become a partner, the university partnering GI by patronizing its products,” he stressed.
The Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh stated that the college is always open for discussion with the relevant public.
Prof Edu-Buando noted that it was a privilege to have a team from Group Ideal to make such donation and therefore commended the president of Group Ideal for giving back to “the hand that fed him.”
President of GI, Dr Nii Kotey Dzani stated that education was the only means through which the country could develop, adding it would not take the setting up of numerous factories to bring the needed development into the country but by training the minds of citizens to do what they can do better.
“You came into this university alone as an individual and there is the need for you to take your studies seriously rather than getting involved in acts that would jeopardize your future” he added
The president who is also a Member of Council of State advised the students to acquire the tenets of integrity since it would be their trump card in case they ventured into business.
The Economics Student Association also presented a plaque to Dr Dzani in honour of his contribution to their activities and the department.
