The Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central in the Greater Accra Region Patrick Yaw Boamah, is rallying fellow MPs to contribute a 1000 cedis each towards an immediate expansion of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
This, he believes, will contribute significantly to reduce the unacceptably high number of maternal and infant mortality rates at the hospital.
About four babies die daily at the hospital and on the average, about 100 expectant mothers die at delivery annually due to congestion at the maternity block.
The solution to this congestion is an abandoned 995-bed capacity facility which has been under construction for 43 years.
The problem, highlighted in JoyNew’s Special Assignment documentary, compelled President Nana Akufo-Addo to visit the hospital last Saturday for firsthand information on the situation. He promised to fix the problem.
Efforts are currently being made for an urgent expansion works to be done on some of the structures to partly reduce the congestion.
Patrick Yaw Boamah says Members of Parliament must champion this by first making personal contributions.
He has proposed at least a thousand cedis payment from members saying “you will never know when your family member is sent to Komfo Anokye”.
Asked how MPs will respond to the call, Patrick Boamah said “I think my colleagues are human beings they’ve watched the clip…we have to show leadership”.
