Akua Donkor
Further cross-examination of Akua Donkor, founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and failed presidential hopeful, in the case in which she is accusing four persons, including her driver, of robbery, took a dramatic turn yesterday.
This time round, Akua asked private legal practitioner, Vincent Aikins, to drop the English language and speak Twi for the hearing of the case.
The GFP founder, who was speaking through an interpreter, threw the court into spontaneous laughter when she again said that she did not know her destination, although she was heading to America on the night of the robbery incident.
She stated that the destination was on her ticket, adding that her purpose for the trip was to meet Ghanaian supporters of her party for interactions after the 2016 polls.
Asked what use it was to meet the supporters after the elections, Madam Akua Donkor emphasized that she was not voted for and as such was meeting the supporters ahead of the next elections, hoping to be voted as president of the country.
The accused persons are Yakubu Yusif, trader; the Central Regional Chairman of the GFP, Banabas Kayase; driver/secretary of the party, Opoku Agyemang, trader and Abdul Razak Shaibu, a member of the GPRTU Task Force.
Two other suspected accomplices – Joe and Nuamah aka Lion – are currently on the run.
According to Chief Superintendent Duutu Tuaruka, the six persons on December 30, 2016 at Taifa in Accra, conspired to rob the GFP flag bearer.
The prosecutor said the accused persons at about 2:30 am at Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra, robbed Akua at gunpoint and snatched her travelling bag containing plane ticket, Ghanaian passport, voter ID card, $30,000 and GH¢3,000.
Under further cross-examination in the court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, Akua Donkor said Banabas is not the secretary of her party.
The GFP founder denied that she reported the accused to the police as the secretary of the party.
Answering questions on Opoku Agyemnag, she said she’s not related to the accused, although they both hail from the same village.
She denied the assertion by the lawyer that Opoku Agyemang had asked for $400 to be given to Barnabas because she had not been paying him for his service as a driver.
