Government allocates ₵45.8M for Sports development

The Sports fraternity is excited after maiden budget presentation of His Excellency President Nana Akufo Addo in parliament.

The new Government has allocated a whopping GH₵45.8 million to the Youth and Sports Ministry for the fiscal year.

The amount is a 218% increment in what was allocated for sports last year by the immediate past John Mahama administration.

And according to Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, who presented the budget, the huge amount will be devoted to expanding sports infrastructure in the country.

 “We will expand all sports infrastructures in the country. We will also transform the Sports College in Winneba to meet world standards. Sports development our schools will be paramount”, he said.

Among the key projects expected to be undertaken by the ministry, as contained in the 2017 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, are the rehabilitation of the four main stadia in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Sekondi.

Also the University of Ghana Sports Complex, which work has been stalled for some years, will be completed this year.

Sports Development Programme for 2017

To expand the infrastructure stock and to transform the National Sports College into a Centre of Excellence, the Ministry continued with the Public Private Partnership (PPP) investment arrangement. In 2017, the feasibility report will be completed to facilitate funding for the project. 643.

The National Sports Authority (NSA), under a Public Private Partnership arrangement is also in the process of procuring a transaction advisor to support the rehabilitation of the four National Sports Stadia located in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Essipong.

In 2017, work on the pre-feasibility report on the project will commence. 644. The NSA in 2016, facilitated over 19 international and various local competitions by the National Sports Associations and won over 29 medals for the country.

A contingent of 19 participated in the 2016 Olympic Games and Paralympics in Brazil last year to promote peace and unity within the international community through the medium of sports.
