Upper East Denkyira MCE race hit by allegation of gender discrimination; NPP group furious

An all-female group of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned attacks on the only female MCE contender for the Upper Denkyira East District in the Central Region.

The group, NPP Royal Ladies, has alleged that a group of young men recently besieged the party headquarters in protest against the candidature of a Development Planner, Nana Yaa Afratima Peprah, as the MCE for the district.

“We condemn this backward action and invite all party people to do same as it does not speak well of our dear party as the champion of women empowerment and adherence of democratic principles,” said a statement issued in Dunkwa by President of the group, Mrs Juliana Appiah.

The NPP Royal Ladies wants the party hierarchy to move to forestall the discrimination against the only female MCE candidate for the Upper East Denkyira district.

It has come to our notice that a group of youth have besieged the party headquarters in protest against the candidature of a Development Planner, Nana Yaa Afratima Peprah as the MCE for Upper Denkyira East District in the central region; we condemn this backward action and invite all party people to do same as it does not speak well of our dear party as the champion of women empowerment and adherence to democratic principles.

It is our believe that the best criterion to use in selecting an MCE should be based on competence and loyalty to the core principles of our dear party and not the use of violent demonstrations to push down our throats just any person at all.

Nana Yaa Afratima is a senior broadcast journalist and highly revered by the people in the district because of the diligence with which she performs her duty. She is currently the Assemblywoman for Amissah/Mpesiem electoral area; where she has suffered a lot of backlash by the former MCE due to her affiliation with the NPP. She owns and operates an NGO called the Women Pride that has touched the lives of several women in the district and beyond. It is competence and impact such as these that we must be looking at and not parading poor young men and women to go shouting at party offices.

She owns and operates an NGO called the Women Pride that has touched the lives of several women in the district and beyond. It is competence and impact such as these that we must be looking at and not parading poor young men and women to go shouting at party offices.

We have been with Afratimah through thick and thin campaigning for the NPP, risking our lives in many instances, we have crossed rivers, slept in the open and fed on by mosquitoes to bring victory to the party, therefore any person or group of persons who claim she has not worked for the party is either mischievous or not himself an active member of the party in the district.

It is irritating to know that some people have soon forgotten that she is a co-founder and Public Relations officer of Loyal Ladies at Dunkwa, president of Girls Girls For Nana on UDS campus in 2012, and head of Livelihood  Empowerment for PPG; roaming the entire nation trying to organize skill training for women in the name of NPP.

We call on His Excellency the President not to succumb to the noise by the minority few since that would set a bad precedence in our party. It must be noted that as a free country anybody can put together some few people to make noise at party offices but this will not auger well for the image of our dear party and must not be tolerated.

Finally, we call on His Excellency to put pride in women by nominating Nana Yaa Afratema to head our district since she is the real grassroots person with the competence to deliver.

Signed.

Mrs Juliana Appiah
