Supporters reacted angrily to the news that instead of playing against Sutton, the ex-Manchester United man will feature in the junior Gunners side

While the Arsenal squad look to avoid another FA Cup giant-killing on Monday, Danny Welbeck is far from first-team action as he features for the Under-23 side.

The former Manchester United striker missed almost nine months of action with a serious knee injury, but first signs were encouraging as he made a successful return.

Two goals against Southampton in the FA Cup raised hopes that Welbeck would return to his best form; but he has not started since that game in January, though he came off the bench against Watford and Chelsea.

And now, as the Gunners gear up for a clash against Sutton, the forward will instead take on Leicester U-23s this Sunday in the Premier League 2 fixture.

“I always had in my head that it was a very important game. In my head I have had a team that will start and play there, for a week or 10 days now. That result we had at Bayern Munich will not influence that selection,” Arsene Wenger said before the game when asked about his team selection.

“The FA Cup is one of our targets. It’s the next game and for us to bounce back after the game we just had, it becomes a very important game. But it always was, in my head.”

Welbeck’s absence, however, has not been received with unanimous support by Arsenal fans, with many arguing that the striker should play a part on Monday.
