Be Careful! These are 4 Things You Do Every Day That Are Just as Bad For You as Smoking

It is a widely accepted fact that smoking does some very bad things to the body. However, these are certain things that are just as detrimental to the body.

While smoking is terrible for your health, these four things are just as detrimental.

If you’re not a smoker and lead a relatively healthy lifestyle, then you probably think you’re in the clear for any future health problems, right?

Wrong. There are many other factors that go in to your day to day health and some can be just as bad as taking a puff or two.

The following four habits either lead to cancer rates equivalent to those caused by smoking or contain similar contaminants to cigarette smoke.

1. Overloading on meat and cheese

Proteins found in animals are rich with a hormone called IGF-1 which can promote the growth of cancer cells.

A study published by the University of Southern California in journal Cell Metabolism found people on high animal protein diets were four times more likely to die of cancer than people on low protein diets.

Yep, this means your red wine and cheese nights may just need to be wine.

2. Not getting enough sleep

If you suffer from lack of sleep or sleep deprivation, this can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, a stroke and a heart attack among other things.

One study found not getting at least six or seven hours of sleep per night resulted in mortality rates on par with cigarette smokers.

Checking your phone in the middle of the night which often can cause you to wake up and not go back to sleep is also detrimental. This is because fragmented sleep interrupts your light and deep sleep cycle – which can speed up the growth of tumours.

3. Cooking with the wrong oil

Studies have shown cooking with vegetable oil releases a particulate matter, aldehydes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are all compounds found in cigarette smoke and can lead to airway inflammation.

Olive oil is a no-no for cooking at high temperatures as well. Rather, you can use Avocado oil as this doesn’t release said chemicals when use at high heat.

4. Sitting down all day

The Alberta Health Services Cancer Care in Canada link inactivity to nearly 160,000 cases of chest, colon, prostate and lung cancer every year.

This is because prolonged sitting down, whether it be at a desk or in a car can cause a multitude of health problems, even if you exercise regularly.

If you’re chummy with your boss, ask them if there’s any way you (or your whole office) could get standing desks put in. Or, alternatively, make sure you go for a walk on your lunch break.
