{"id":366158,"date":"2016-01-07T05:58:15","date_gmt":"2016-01-07T05:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/politics\/2016\/01\/07\/past-govts-also-built-schools-didnt-kill-ghanaians-with-taxes-npp\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T05:58:15","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T05:58:15","slug":"past-govts-also-built-schools-didnt-kill-ghanaians-with-taxes-npp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2016\/01\/07\/past-govts-also-built-schools-didnt-kill-ghanaians-with-taxes-npp\/","title":{"rendered":"Past Gov\u2019ts also built schools; didn\u2019t \u2018kill\u2019 Ghanaians with taxes \u2013 NPP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed the reasons given by the government for recent increases in various taxes and tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NPP, the government\u2019s rationale for the tax hikes does not justify the \u2018astronomical\u2019 increases of between 18 to 27% on the prices of petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong> on Wednesday, the Communications Director of the NPP, Nana Akomeah, stated that the NDC-led administration\u2019s expenditure on several development projects are not enough of an excuse to impose such taxes on Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>He opined that\u00a0past governments in the country\u2019s history have undertaken similar development projects but none, prior to the current administration, had overwhelmed the citizens with such taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery government in the history of this country including the colonial government built roads, built schools, built bridges but they did not kill Ghanaians with taxes. They can\u2019t tell us they want to build roads and then kill us with taxes,\u201d Nana Akomeah stated.<\/p>\n<p>The tax hikes have been criticised widely with several experts and groups including the Trades Union Congress (TUC).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>in defense of the new tax regime<\/strong><\/span> revealed that government had accrued a\u00a04.5 billion cedi debt which if not cleared, could lead to an intensification of lthe power crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Nana Akomeah\u00a0accused the government of trying to offset its failure to pay its own debt by transferring them to Ghanaians in the form of taxes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-179377\" src=\"https:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GH-Petroleum-Tax-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"GH Petroleum Tax\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GH-Petroleum-Tax.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/GH-Petroleum-Tax-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say there is some legacy debt, they say they owe the VRA and ECG. We pay our electricity bills and energy bills. In 2012, the Government imposed 80 percent increment in electricity. Every Ghanaian pays, why can\u2019t the Government pay its bills? When they owe, they say the taxpayers should pay the debt that they have neglected to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nana Akomeah reiterated the NPP\u2019s commitment to protecting the interests of Ghanaians adding that the party will do everything it can to ensure that tax payers are not exploited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we want to achieve is to relieve Ghanaians from the increased hardships that are going to be visited on them by the astronomical increases in the last month of the electricity by 60 percent, water by 50 percent and petrol by 27 percent. We seek to relieve Ghanaians of the enormous hardships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vast majority of the youth do not even have work.
