{"id":365590,"date":"2016-07-20T16:18:16","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T16:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/world\/2016\/07\/20\/whatsapp-in-brazil-back-in-action-after-suspension\/"},"modified":"2016-07-20T16:18:16","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T16:18:16","slug":"whatsapp-in-brazil-back-in-action-after-suspension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2016\/07\/20\/whatsapp-in-brazil-back-in-action-after-suspension\/","title":{"rendered":"WhatsApp in Brazil back in action after suspension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The WhatsApp messaging service in Brazil is operating again after it was temporarily suspended for failing to hand over information requested in a criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The third suspension in two years lasted for a few hours, affecting some 100 million users.<\/p>\n<p>But Supreme Court judge Ricardo Lewandowski later lifted the nationwide blockage, calling it disproportionate.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp said they did not have access to the details requested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suspension of service apparently violates the fundamental precept of freedom of expression and communication,\u201d the Supreme Court said in its ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lewandowski pointed out that the lower court judge\u2019s decision seemed \u201cnot very reasonable and not very proportional\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp \u2013 owned by social media giant Facebook since February 2015 \u2013 gradually resumed normal service after the court\u2019s ruling, correspondents say.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/_90451051_gettyimages-501779240.jpg\" alt=\"A man walks with his mobile phone in his hand in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\"\/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier in the day, lower court Judge Daniela Barbosa ordered the suspension of WhatsApp, accusing its parent company Facebook of failing \u201cto provide information that will be critical to the success of an investigation and later to bolster the criminal case\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear which investigation she is referring to, but she said the firm had been repeatedly asked to provide messages to police investigators in the city of Caxias, north of Rio.<\/p>\n<p>Taking to Facebook, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum said it was \u201cshocking that less than two months after Brazilian people and lawmakers loudly rejected blocks of services like WhatsApp, history is repeating itself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He was referring to its suspension for 72 hours in May, which forced users to turn to alternative services \u2013 a huge proportion of the internet-using population in a country with some of the world\u2019s highest mobile phone charges.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter users responded with frustration \u2013 and, in many cases, with humour:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/_90451461_5a01e9a6-92e2-4b94-9b96-0b86db0e061f.jpg\" alt=\"Twitter user @BelemNoticias tweets pic of jubilant crowd cheering and hugging: \" width=\"610\" height=\"428\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\"\/><br \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>WhatsApp also argues that it cannot share information, because its encrypted communications mean \u201conly you and the person you\u2019re communicating with can read what is sent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Technology commentators suggest regular interruptions to service could dent WhatsApp\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The WhatsApp messaging service in Brazil is operating again after it was temporarily suspended for failing to hand over information requested in a criminal investigation.
