While couples in China are welcoming the end of the nation\u2019s decades-long one-child policy, private companies seem to be reacting to the news with ludicrous new policies regarding\u00a0maternity leave. They\u2019re actually asking female employees to submit an application of pregnancy, seeking the company\u2019s approval to become a parent up to a year\u00a0in advance.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It seems that these companies are introducing \u2018reproductive schedules\u2019 to avoid too many maternity leaves arising from \u2018simultaneous pregnancies\u2019. A woman who recently applied for a job in northeast China\u2019s Jilin Province was told that if recruited, she\u2019d have to apply for pregnancy approval at least a year <\/i>in advance, and wait for her turn to become a mother.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s out of helplessness that we regulate this,\u201d she quoted the company\u2019s HR department as having told\u00a0her. \u201cAfter the easing of the one-child policy, many of our working staff say that they want a second child. But from the management side, we need to take the interest of the company into consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another company in China\u2019s Henan province issued its employees a rather controversial notice that stated: \u201cAn employee birth plan has been established and will be strictly enforced. Employees who do not give birth according to the plan and whose work is impacted will face a one-time fine of 1,000 yuan and will not be considered for promotion.\u201d The notice added that women who gave birth outside the schedule may also have to forego their year-end bonuses.<\/p>\n

Mr. Zhang, a manager at a private company in China, explained to the media how overlapping maternity leaves could affect his organisation. \u201cThere are six women at my department in total, and three of them are now pregnant,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause of limited budget, it\u2019s almost impossible to recruit new people; thus some other colleagues may need to take extra work during the leave of pregnant workers.\u201d\u00a0According to some news reports, the policy to fine women who don\u2019t get pregnant on schedule isn\u2019t legal yet. But in a country where 64 percent of the workforce is made up of women, experts say that laws protecting pregnant workers aren\u2019t always enforced. In the meantime, citizens who are aware of the nation\u2019s labour laws are taking to social media to express their outrage.<\/p>\n
