{"id":320327,"date":"2016-02-24T18:54:15","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T18:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/govt-agrees-to-pay-teachers-ghc1-5-million\/"},"modified":"2016-02-24T18:54:15","modified_gmt":"2016-02-24T18:54:15","slug":"govt-agrees-to-pay-teachers-ghc1-5-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2016\/02\/24\/govt-agrees-to-pay-teachers-ghc1-5-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t agrees to pay teachers GHc1.5 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div readability=\"111\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Government has reached an agreement with the leadership of the three teacher unions to pay them GHc1.5 million as part payment of the arrears owed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The amount is to defray part of the about GHc16 million owed them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision was taken after\u00a0a marathon meeting with the Labour Ministry, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Controller and Accountant General Department, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ghana Education Service today\u00a0[Wednesday].<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_193111\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"32\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-193111\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/leadership-of-teacher-unions.jpg\" alt=\"Leadership of the teacher unions\" width=\"672\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/leadership-of-teacher-unions-300x179.jpg 300w, http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/leadership-of-teacher-unions.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leadership of the teacher unions<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is the third time the teacher unions have met with government after two previous meetings on Monday and Tuesday ended inconclusively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The various teacher unions; the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) are demanding the payment of their salary arrears by February 29, or they will embark on a strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>both sides had to compromise on their earlier positions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to government, it will pay the rest of the of 2013 and 2014 arrears after a validation process which is expected to begin on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the decision taken today [Wednesday], the unions say they still stand by their February 29 deadline, pending the fulfillment of government\u2019s latest \u00a0promise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>We can\u2019t meet teachers\u2019 Feb. 29 deadline:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- Quick Adsense WordPress Plugin: http:\/\/quicksense.net\/ --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu, had confessed that government cannot meet the demands by the teacher unions before the end of February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe bottom line is that, government cannot meet the 29th February deadline of the groups. It is practically impossible given the volume of data that we need to process,\u201d he said in a <strong>Citi News<\/strong> interview.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Haruna Iddrisu explained that although the grievances raised by the unions are legitimate, it cannot be solved before the end of February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m beginning to appreciate how enormous the problem has been, but the commitment is that, we will pay those we\u2019ve recruited. But they will be paid only subject to validation of their data by the Auditor General. Outstanding allowances need to be processed, we need to discuss it further and the Minister of Finance will deal with it with the Controller and Accountant General,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Accusations and counter accusations <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ghana Education Service (GES) had accused some of the teachers of faking their documents hence delaying the payments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the GES, out of 14,575 input forms that were initially submitted by teachers for processing and payment, only 6,268 were found to be attached with genuine supporting documents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The teacher unions responded by saying they are not to blame if some of the teachers have fake certificates and that the GES, which recruits teachers, should be blamed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some even called for the Director General Jacob Kor to be arrested for supervising the recruitment of these teachers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2013<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Kojo Agyeman\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p><!-- Quick Adsense WordPress Plugin: http:\/\/quicksense.net\/ --><\/p><\/div>\n<p>[ad_2]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ad_1] Government has reached an agreement with the leadership of the three teacher unions to pay them GHc1.5 million as part payment of the arrears owed.
