Mr Assange read a statement to the media via a video link<\/strong><\/p>\n

The foreign secretary has branded as \u201cridiculous\u201d a UN panel\u2019s ruling that Julian Assange be allowed to go free, as the Wikileaks founder demanded the decision be respected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr Assange \u2013 who faces extradition to Sweden over a rape claim, which he denies \u2013 claimed asylum in London\u2019s Ecuadorean embassy in 2012.<\/p>\n

The panel said<\/a> he had been \u201carbitrarily detained\u201d and should get compensation.<\/p>\n

Philip Hammond rejected the decision, accusing Mr Assange of evading justice.<\/p>\n

Mr Assange hailed it a \u201csignificant victory\u201d and called the decision \u201cbinding\u201d, but the UK government dismissed this.<\/p>\n

The 44-year-old Australian was originally arrested in London in 2010 under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Sweden over rape and sexual assault allegations.<\/p>\n

Two years later, while on bail, he claimed asylum inside the Ecuadorean embassy in Knightsbridge.<\/p>\n

Swedish prosecutors dropped an investigation into two sex assault claims<\/a> against Mr Assange last year after running out of time to question him. However, he still faces the more serious accusation of rape.<\/p>\n

\u2018Brought a smile\u2019<\/h2>\n

Reading a statement via a video link from the embassy, he said the opinion of the panel was \u201cvindication\u201d, adding: \u201cThe lawfulness of my detention is now a matter of settled law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Assange said it was a \u201creally significant victory that has brought a smile to my face\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, Mr Hammond said Mr Assange was a \u201cfugitive from justice\u201d, adding that he can come out \u201cany time he chooses\u201d but will still have to face justice in Sweden.<\/p>\n

Mr Assange said the comments by Mr Hammond were \u201cbeneath\u201d the minister\u2019s stature and \u201cinsulting\u201d to the UN, while Ecuador\u2019s foreign minister criticised the UK for rejecting the panel\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Ricardo Pati\u00f1o said the UK had violated \u201cimportant articles of the Universal Human Rights Convention and of the International Treaty on Political and Civil rights\u201d.<\/p>\n

The UK Foreign Office said the report \u201cchanges nothing\u201d and it will \u201cformally contest the working group\u2019s opinion\u201d.<\/p>\n

The government said while a European Arrest Warrant remained in place the UK continued to have a legal obligation to extradite Mr Assange.<\/p>\n

In September 2014, Mr Assange complained to the UN that he was being \u201carbitrarily detained\u201d as he could not leave without being arrested.<\/p>\n

The complaint<\/a> against the UK and Sweden claimed Mr Assange had been deprived of his liberty for an \u201cunacceptable length of time\u201d.<\/p>\n

The UN\u2019s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention insisted Mr Assange\u2019s detention \u201cshould be brought to an end, that his physical integrity and freedom of movement be respected\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Wikileaks founder had been subjected to \u201cdifferent forms of deprivation of liberty\u201d it said, initially while he was held in isolation at London\u2019s Wandsworth Prison for 10 days in 2010.<\/p>\n

The deprivation had been \u201ccontinuous\u201d since he was initially arrested in the UK on 7 December 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr Assange should be afforded the right to compensation,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

Three members of the five-person panel found in Mr Assange\u2019s favour, while one rejected his claim and another did not take part in the investigation.<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s permanent representative to the UN Julian Braithwaite has written to the panel expressing the government\u2019s surprise and disappointment with the outcome.<\/p>\n

In a statement posted on Twitter on Thursday<\/a>, Mr Assange said his passport should be returned and his arrest warrant dropped if the UN panel ruled in his favour.<\/p>\n
