Renting a flat in urban India is no easy task, specially for single women and men.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Signboards prohibiting \u201cbachelor tenants\u201d are not an uncommon sight in the capital Delhi and its neighbouring suburbs.<\/p>\n

Landlords usually have preferences like \u201cvegetarian only\u201d, \u201cgovernment officials only\u201d and \u201cHindus only\u201d.<\/p>\n

But they also have a long list of reasons to not rent their properties to single people.<\/p>\n

Here are the top five reasons that landlords give to \u201cnot even consider\u201d single people as tenants.<\/p>\n

No alcohol please, we\u2019re Indian<\/h3>\n

Several property agents said that one of the most common reasons that landlords don\u2019t like single people is because they have strict \u201cno alcohol\u201d policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if some landlord agrees to rent out his flat to a single person, the first condition they usually set is that the tenant cannot drink [alcohol] at home,\u201d one property agent who works in the suburban area of Ghaziabad said.<\/p>\n

He added that \u201csome bachelors lie about this but they are often caught because landlords like to pay surprise visits to their tenants\u201d.<\/p>\n

Rent review<\/h3>\n

The second reason, according to the agent is that \u201clandlords have this misconception that bachelor people don\u2019t pay their rent on time\u201d.<\/p>\n

Kamal Vikram Dhar, a marketing professional who lives in the Ghaziabad area on the outskirts of Delhi, said \u201cit\u2019s frustrating that landlords have these misconception\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to meet at least 15 landlords before one finally agreed to rent his flat to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bad hygiene\u2019<\/h3>\n

Some landlords also believe that single people keep the place dirty and don\u2019t care about hygiene.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is just generalisation,\u201d said Ruhi Agarwal, a student who also had a hard time finding a place to live.<\/p>\n

\u201cHygiene has nothing to do with one being single or not. But yes, it\u2019s common for landlords to repeatedly remind us about keeping the place clean,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u2018No boyfriends and girlfriends\u2019<\/h3>\n

Being in a relationship can also seriously dent any single person\u2019s chances of renting a flat in Delhi.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just can\u2019t bring your boyfriend or other male friends home. And if you do, it often become a scandal in the apartment,\u201d a young woman who works in an IT firm in Noida, another suburban area of Delhi, told the BBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome friends of mine were told to vacate their flat within 24 hours because they invited their male friends to their house,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Amit Agarwal, a Noida-based property agent, said \u201clandlords are yet to be comfortable with the idea of relationships\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bad influence\u2019<\/h3>\n

Mr Agarwal said some landlords also fear that single people are \u201ca bad influence on children because they drink and smoke\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever landlords come to us to to put their properties for rent in the market, their first preference is not single people,\u201d he said,<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not agree with them, but then I don\u2019t have a choice. It takes too much effort to find a place for single people.\u201d<\/p>\n
