Two out of five armed robbers, who invaded a \u2018galamsey\u2019 site at Asankragwaa in the Western Region to carry out their nefarious activities at the site, have been lynched by a mob in the area.<\/p>\n

The two armed robbers, whose names were given only as Lukman, 29, believed to the gang leader and Tahiru Asibi, 26, were beaten mercilessly by the mob and died when the police were transporting them to the hospital.<\/p>\n

According to the Western Regional Police Command, two of the robbers named only as Sumaila and \u201cRed\u201d escaped while one Mohammed Iddrisu, 26, and a taxi driver, was arrested by the police to assist in investigations.<\/p>\n

The police retrieved one AK 47 riffle, which was fully loaded and two magazines from the armed robbers.<\/p>\n

Briefing the press in Sekondi, DCOP Isaac Alex Quainoo, Western Regional Police Commander, noted that the incident happened on January 11, 2016 at about 11pm.<\/p>\n

He mentioned that the Asankragwaa Police received a distress call from somebody in a village called Adaase near Asankragwaa that some armed robbers had attacked a \u2018galamsey\u2019 site and were causing mayhem at the place.<\/p>\n

The police quickly moved to the site and as soon as they arrived the armed robbers opened fire on them, which resulted in a shoot-out.<\/p>\n

He noted that the police managed to shoot one of the robbers but the robber in an attempt to run away moved to the thicket and the rest run away.<\/p>\n

The Regional Commander indicated that after the shoot-out the police combed the area and found one of the robbers who was seriously injured.<\/p>\n

They decided to take him to the hospital but he died on the way.<\/p>\n

DCOP Quainoo added that later the police realized that the armed robbers travelled to the area in a taxi cab that was parked there.<\/p>\n

The taxi cab had no keys and because it was dark the police officers could not comb the whole area.<\/p>\n

The police relayed the information to the villagers to look out for any suspicious characters in the area.<\/p>\n

The Regional Commander said they had information that one of the suspects called Tahiru Asibi alias \u201c19\u201d had been found at another village called Kojokrom, which is about five miles away from the scene of the crime.<\/p>\n

When the police found the suspect, they realized that he had been subjected to severe beatings and had sustained cutlass wounds in the head.<\/p>\n

Even though Tahiru could not speak well, he was able to tell the police that they were five in number and that they came to the area from \u2018Sofoline\u2019 in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.<\/p>\n

The armed robber also told the police that four of them came from the Ashanti region and they picked another robber called \u2018Red\u2019 who managed to escape from Adaase near Asankragwaa.<\/p>\n

The police also located the taxi cab, which was supposed to have been used by the armed robbers for their operations.<\/p>\n

He revealed that the armed robbers deflated the tyres of the victims\u2019 vehicles so that the vehicles could not be used to chase them (robbers) and wounded some of them.<\/p>\n

Other items retrieved from the robbers included talisman and mobile phones, among others.<\/p>\n

The Regional Commander stressed that the police were still investigating the case and would soon find out how the armed robbers got the AK 47 riffles.<\/p>\n
