US police have taken a man into custody after a series of apparently random shootings left six people dead in the Michigan town of Kalamazoo.

Four people were killed at a restaurant and two at a car dealership, local media say. Three others were injured.

The attacks are being linked to an earlier shooting at a car park elsewhere in the town, which left one woman seriously injured.

A suspect matching witness descriptions has been detained, local police say.

“This is a tragic chain of events for our community and we are diligently continuing the investigation to confirm if the correct person is in custody,” Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety wrote on their Facebook page.

“These are random murders,” Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.

The shootings took place on Saturday evening at three locations – outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant, a Ford dealership and a block of flats

  • Police were first called to a Kalamazoo residential building where a woman was shot multiple times and was taken to hospital in a serious condition
  • Hours later, officers were called to the car dealership where two people were shot and killed, and a third wounded, Mr Matyas said. The two killed are believed to have been father and son
  • The third shooting in the Cracker Barrel car park saw the gunman open fire on people in their cars. Four were killed and a fifth person was critically wounded, Mr Matyas said
