“It is very expedient that Muslims avoid troubles and involve in activities that will bring chaos in our state.”

He thus urged all Muslim youth to act as peace ambassadors in their localities.

“We need peace, and we are really encouraging the youth to avoid any circumstances because of small monies to go and cause trouble. Don’t allow somebody to buy your integrity because of his own desires.”

He further reminded Muslims to be guided by Islam’s cardinal principle of peace and total submission to the will of Allah, before, during and after the December polls.

The former Chief Imam of Kamina Barracks in Tamale, Sheikh Eliasu Umar, called for transparency and fairness throughout the processes leading to the general elections.

The convener, Kamaldeen Abdullah, dispelled the widespread misconception that some Muslim youth particularly those living in Zongo communities caused anarchy during elections.

“I think it is very important we lay bare the fact that violent youth necessarily do not come only from the Muslim or Zongo communities.”

“The youth of this country in general are prone to violence which has to do with hardships, joblessness and issues that militate against their own welfare.”

He nonetheless proffered a solution to electoral violence saying, “What we need to do as a people and as a country is to rather educate ourselves towards achieving a peaceful election; and again ensuring that justice is key in whatever we are doing.”

“If an institution like the Electoral Commission is supposed to play a role in these elections, it ought to play that role and make sure that everybody is satisfied. If the judiciary are supposed to play their role, they have to play it and make sure everybody is satisfied; and the executive arm of government itself where security is vested in their arms, they ought to play it fairly to ensure that everybody is satisfied.”

Muslim scholars and youth from Bolgatanga, Accra and Kumasi participated in the event.
