Akufo-Addo wins hearts of Volta chiefs

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has received more endorsements of his candidature, in the run-up to the December 7 election, from Chiefs in Kadjebi and Jasikan, as he continued his campaign in the Volta region.

The Paramount Chief of Kadjebi, Nana Ogyeabour Akompi Finam II, who was first to endorse Nana Akufo-Addo, explained that his declaration of support for the NPP flagbearer stems from the “unprecedented” levels of development brought to Kadjebi under the era of President John Agyekum Kufuor.

According to Nana Ogyeabour Akompi Finam II, “we know what President Kufuor did for us when he was in office, for which you (Akufo-Addo) were a part of. There was a lot of development in Ghana during that period. For us in Kadjebi, 110 schools were constructed. This was truly unprecedented.”

The Kadjebi Chief added that “for the first time in our history, under the era of the NPP, residents of Kadjebi had access to potable, pipe-borne water. Till date, water flows 24/7. Water was also extended to Ahomansu and Papase. Papase was also given a hospital by President Kufuor. The secondary schools in Jasikan and Bueman were all upgraded by the NPP, which doubled enrolment into these institutions”.

It is for these reasons, Nana Ogyeabour Akompi Finam II stated that “we pray to God that your third attempt at the Presidency is successful. We are solidly behind you.”

The Kadjebi Chief also endorsed the policies which have been outlined by Nana Akufo-Addo during the electioneering campaign.

“Your 1-Village-1-Dam policy was initially ridiculed, as usual. But, for us, we believe it is a step in the right direction. I have stayed in the North before, and know, at firsthand, their need for water, both for human consumption and for farming activities. When you come into office and implement this policy, I’m certain that residents in the 3 northern regions will be happy with you,” he said.

Nana Ogyeabour Akompi Finam II also endorsed the Free SHS policy, espoused by the NPP flagbearer in the 2008 and 2012 elections, expressing his delight that the policy remains an integral feature of Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign message for 2016.

“We have also heard that you intend to give every constituency the equivalent of $1 million. We are more than delighted with this proposal. We believe that this initiative, together with government’s developmental agenda for every constituency, will spur on development. This initiative will mean that we will be able to decide for ourselves what our needs are and proceed to solve them accordingly,” he noted.

Expressing worry about the high levels of unemployment prevailing, Nana Ogyeabour Akompi Finam II maintained that “your policy to set up of factories, in partnership with the private sector, in every district of the country is laudable.”

He continued, “If you live in a country where the citizenry have no money in their pockets, the nation is one miserable one. That is how Ghana, unfortunately, has become. We pray for God to give you victory, so you can come and implement all these policies.”

Nana Akufo-Addo also paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Okajakrom, Nana Osabarima Antwi Adjei, who also endorsed the candidature of the NPP flagbearer.

The Chief, like many others in the Volta Region who interacted with the NPP flagbearer, requested for the creation of the Oti region, explaining that the creation of a new region will be of immense economic and developmental benefit to the northern and southern parts of the Volta Region, as it will also bring governance closer to people.

“2016 is your year. We know that you are winning and we pray that you will grant this request to us, when you come into office,” he added.

The NPP flagbearer was accompanied on his visit by John Peter Amewu, Volta Regional NPP Chairman, and his regional executives; Alan Kyerematen, NPP Campaign Sector Committee Chair on Trade and Industry; Otiko Afisa Djaba, NPP National Women’s Organiser; Elizabeth Ohene, former Minister of Education under President Kufuor; Kwasi Owusu-Yeboah, former Volta regional Minister; Lawrence Aziele, NPP parliamentary candidate for Buem; Kofi Adjei Ntim, NPP parliamentary candidate for Akan; Kenwuud Nuworsu, former Volta Regional NPP Chairman; Campaign Aides, Mawusi Nudekor Awity, Pius Enam Hadzide and Iddrisu Musah Superior, amongst others.
