The new title will be bestowed on the super hero at an event in UN’s headquarters in New York on its 75th anniversary, October 21.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson and actors who have played the character in movies are expected to be present at the event which will mark the launch of UN’s landmark global campaign which supports the achievement of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls – which is Social Development Goal (SDG) 5.

Tuesday marked the International Day of the Girl – a day which was created by UN five years ago to spread awareness and spark discussion about the unique challenges confronting girls in the world. These challenges are many, ranging from lack of education, abuse, trafficking and even forced marriage.

According to a recent UNESCO report, millions out of the world’s 1.1 billion girls are not in school, and nearly two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people are female.
