The waste management department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has begun fumigating the Kaase landfill site following public concerns raised by some residents.
Mr. John Gorkeh-Miah, the Director of the Department, said they had been spraying the area with chemicals not only to kill dangerous reptiles, houseflies and mosquitoes but to subdue the overpowering stench from the place.
He said spraying gangs had also been moving from room-to-room to tackle insects, making things uncomfortable for the people.
Additionally, the department, was removing silt from the Sissai River, running through the area to check periodic flooding.
This comes on the heels of a public protest by the residents of four communities – Oti, Atonsu, Kuwait and Aprabo, at the insanitary conditions at the site, which they claimed posed serious health hazard to them.
Mr. Elliot Fosu Bannor, the assembly member for Kuwait-Aprabo, said they were happy with the swift response of the KMA and asked that the safety measures were sustained.
‘Residents hold protest’
Some residents of Kaasi in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi on Wednesday protested against the the dumping of waste at the dompoase landfill site. They blocked city authorities from discharging waste at the site.
Clad in all red, they blocked the main road leading to the landfill site managed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA). According to them, the condition at the landfill site is injurious to their health, and claimed the city authorities have failed to act, hence their protest.
