Tema General Hospital Gets Gh¢100, 000 Incinerator

The outgoing President of Rotary Club, Tema, Jabez Duncan-Williams, swearing in Rotarian Mark Dei

The Rotary Club of Tema is soliciting for funds to construct a modern medical incinerator for the Tema General Hospital to help the health facility manage its waste.

Estimated at a cost of GH¢100, 000, the waste furnace is to save the premier hospital in Tema which has been without an incinerator for some time now.

Rotarian Mark Dei, President of Rotary Club of Tema, who made this known at this year’s Presidential Ball and Fundraising Dinner and Investiture of New President, said, “This is a target which the humanitarian club has put forward to achieve for its calendar year.”

He was optimistic that the construction of the furnace for the hospital would help bring relief to both authorities of the facility and residents in the metropolis.

The president appealed to organisations and individuals in the Tema Metropolis and the country as a whole to come to the aid of the hospital with financial support to help build the incinerator.

Touching on his tenure to lead the club in Tema, Rotarian Dei promised to allow the effect of his work and decisions ripple out all over the people by ensuring Rotary serves to change the lives of people.

As part of its goal for this year, he further mentioned that Rotary Club of Tema will distribute books to schools and colleges as well as organise a book fair.

Rotarian Dei continued that several boreholes will be constructed for rural communities, adding, “We shall also continue with our yearly community programmes such as visiting children’s wards at some hospitals during Christmas, making donations and assisting the needy in society and completion of the Torman Project in Tema Harbour Area.”

For his part, Dr Kwabena Opoku-Adusei, Director of the Tema General Hospital, disclosed that more than 25 percent of the total waste generated by healthcare establishments is regarded as hazardous and may create a variety of health and environmental risks if not managed and destroyed in an appropriate manner.

According to him, the construction of an incinerator for the hospital is the only method to provide complete destruction and neutralisation of the medical waste ideally at the source.

He was grateful to the Rotary Club of Tema for the initative, calling on institutions in Tema not to abandon the health facility since it is the only referral hospital in Tema.

The guest speaker at the event, Nana Ato Dadzie, a private legal practitioner and former Chief of Staff in the erstwhile Jerry John Rawlings regime, appealed to leaders of the nation to turn their attention to the youth in the country in order to help save the culture and future of Ghana.
