Community nurses call off strike

The about thirteen thousand community health nurses, who laid down their tools over how their certificates had been labelled, have now called off their strike.

They say, they have managed to resolve their grievances with the Ghana Health Service.

The Service had appealed to the nurses to relax their stance but the Labour Commission last week, ordered them to return to work.

The nurses were demanding that their certificate which now bares the title; Nursing Assistants, should rather be Community Health Nurses.

But speaking to Citi News, the President of the Community Health Nurses Association, Esther Bamfo said they have come to some form of understanding, hence their decision.

“Our issues were two;one with our employer and the other one with MMC but for now we are done with that of our employer, that is why we are calling off the strike. Our employers say for them, they will maintain our name Community Health Nurse and they will also support any drive aimed at amending the MMC laws to recognize community health nurses and then also give us a community health certificate,” she explained.

She further urged all the striking nurses to return to work since the industrial action had been called off.

“The strike is off so nobody should stay in the house, everybody should return to work and I am also urging them to put in maximum efforts to work and work well. They must change their attitude and work for Ghana.”
