Traders at Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, say they are relieved about the lifting of the curfew imposed on them in February, following clashes over a disputed cemetery land.
The Ministry of Interior placed a curfew after the clashes between some Muslim youth and the youth of the area, backed by the Tafo Traditional Council, led to the death of one person.
Many others were left injured whiles property worth thousands of cedis were destroyed forcing the Interior Ministry to impose the curfew.
Following the lifting of the curfew, Citi News’ checks revealed that the market areas, which use to be dormant, is now busy with activity barely a day after the curfew was lifted.
The traders in an interview with Citi News expressed their appreciation to government for the decision.
“We expect business to pick up. We also pray that the clashes do not happen again.”
The traders also acknowledged that security in the area is much better as a result of the curfew.
“When I heard the curfew had been lifted, I was very happy because it was gravely affecting our business. Now that security is very tight at Tafo, I know there will be peace here,” another trader indicated.
