THE BRONG Ahafo Regional Police MTTD under the leadership of the regional police commander, DCOP Maxwell Atingane have started a non-stop exercise to check road worthiness of vehicles that ply roads in the region after the gory accident  that claimed more than 60 lives last week.

The exercise which is taking place on major roads in the region will check worn out tires, faulty breaks, cracked windscreens, smoking exhaust pipes among other possible faults that can lead to accident. The exercise which began yesterday on Sunyani -Techiman road, Sunyani -Goaso- Hwidiem  roads and Techiman –Kumasi road, took motorists unaware  with some begging for leniency.

Fifteen motorcycles and 6 cars were impounded for various road offences and have been immediately processed for court.  The regional police commander, DCOP Maxell Atingane, described the carnage on roads in the region as unacceptable and so they have decided to wage war on recalcitrant drivers who will not obey simple road traffic regulations. He said the IGP, John Kudalor has directed that road blocks and checks should be intensified on all major roads both day and night to check overspeeding, overloading, reckless driving and drunk-driving among others that endanger lives of passengers and other road users.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE on the Sunyani – Kumasi highway after the exercise yesterday, DCOP Atingane said the road traffic regulations will be applied to the letter  and has consequently asked motorists to do the right thing because they will not be spared if found culpable. He also advised vehicle owners to make sure their vehicles are maintained regularly before putting them on the roads.

He said the exercise is not limited to only commercial vehicles but private cars also. He called on passengers to report to the police at check points on the roads, the recalcitrant attitude of any driver, either of the vehicle in which they are or any other. The B/A Regional Police boss said the police will be serious in monitoring vehicles on finished asphalted roads because motorists are taking advantage of good roads in the region and are over speeding.

He warned motorists who flag their colleagues to alert them of the presence of the police on the roads, to stop else they will be equally arrested and punished for obstruction of duty or justice.

Some of the roads that the police will focus on are Kumasi Sunyani road, Techiman- Kumasi road, Techimam- Wa road, Techiman- Kintampo Tamale road and Sunyani Sampa roads.
