#SOTNGhana: Gov’t to open Boxing gym at Korle-Gonno – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says a new boxing gym and sports complex will be built by Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) at Korle-Gonno this year.

The area is very close to Bukom, where Ghana’s boxing talents have been groomed over the years, but for many decades has lacked a facility to give budding boxers the best training for their professional careers.

The President made this known when he read the State of the Nation Address before Parliament on Thursday.

“Mr. Speaker, a new boxing and sports complex being built by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) near the Korle Lagoon, will be commissioned this year. This will give opportunity to young people in Bukom and surrounding areas who have the passion for boxing to realize their dreams. Honourable Nii Lante Vanderpuye, your boxing gym is here,” the President said directly to the MP and Minister of Sports.

When commissioned, the gym should provide an avenue for the national amateur boxing team, the Black Bombers, to train ahead of major international competitions.

The Black Bombers have had major issues with finding a training facility ahead of  their 2016 Rio Games qualifiers in March in Cameroon, after they could not pay an amount of GHS 3,000 demanded by the National Sports Authority for camping and training at the Theodosia Okoh National Hockey Pitch.

The President, John Dramani Mahama, did not state when exactly the commissioning would take place.

Government has over the years promised to pay attention to so-called lesser known sports.
