Exporters, Importers call off demo over tax hikes

The Exporters and Importers Association of Ghana has called off  its planned demonstration over the recent increment in tax stamps.

The Association planned to demonstrate against what they say are high taxes being charged at the ports – a situation they say is inimical to the growth of their businesses.

A tax stamp is attached to certain products or documents and paid to government to indicate that a required tax has been paid.

Parliament in 2013 increased the tax stamp which was meant to increase government revenue and to curb importation and smuggling of cheaper goods that unfairly compete with indigenous industries.

A statement from the association indicated that the strike had been called off due to a meeting with the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly , Isaac Ashai.

The statement further revealed that the MCE will be having a meeting with the government and “will report back on the way forward to the importers and exporters association of Ghana on Tuesday, 1st of March 2016.”

‘Killer’ Taxes

The Exporters and Importers Association is not the only institution that has complained about high taxes being charged at the ports.

A number of business operators have also expressed over the same issue. They have threatened to embark on a three day strike from Monday, 25 February, 2016 if their concerns are not addressed.
