National Athletics Open Championships set for Feb. 20

The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has announced that it will organise an Open Championships at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on Saturday February 20.

The event will be the third to be organised by the GAA and it is aimed at unearthing athletics talents in various aspects of the sport for the nation.

Executive member of the Ghana Athletics Association, Erasmus Kwaw told Citi Sports on Tuesday about this year’s Open Championships.

“This will be the third one and it will be open to every athlete who believes he or she has the ability to perform across the major track and field events.” “Because this year is an Olympic year, the event will get a lot more attention.

Athletes in the country will more motivated to give their all because all our events will serve as qualifiers for the Games.” “If any athlete meets the qualifying standards, they will go the Games. We expect lots of athletes to come to the Open Championships and give us a good start to a key year in athletics.”

According to the GAA, the Open Championships is one of their 10 intended programmes for the year to discover and improve the capabilities of athletes in Ghana. However, the GAA says these programmes can only take place if there is adequate funding.
