Importers and Exporters in Ghana will on February 25th embark on a demonstration at the Tema Habour to register their displeasure over what they say too much tax been collected at the port.

The importers and Exporters say taxes like the Special Level Tax and the NHIS tax are making their work difficult.

Speaking to Citi News Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana Samson Asiki says they have already alerted the Police about their protest.

He argued that tax rate in Ghana is high as compared to other countries in the African sub-region.

“As compared to their competitors in the other sub-regions, Ghana stands on the high rate in terms of taxation so we are taking about the special levy tax that was introduced that was supposed to even go off somewhere July 2015 but it is still running concurrently in the book. We are talking about the National Insurance Health Levy that is still running in the books of importers,” he lamented.

GUTA bares teeth

In another development, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has also threatened to hit the streets following the adoption and introduction of the Ecowas Common External Tariffs (CET).

According to GUTA, the new law is unfair.

GUTA’s threat follows the implementation of the Common External Tariff, which took effect on Monday, February 1, 2016.

CET is to harmonize tariffs being charged in the ECOWAS sub-region.
