Awuni Probes Assaulting Cops [suspect]

The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Awuni Angwubutoge is investigating an alleged assault of DAILY GUIDE reporter, Daniel Bampoe, by three police officers in New Juaben.

The action follows a report made by the victim to the regional commander last Monday. According to the reporter he took a shot of an escaping suspect from the grip of some police officers.

The three Lance Corporals were angered by the reporter taking shots of the scene and so seized his camera and subjected him to some slaps after which they arrested and detained him for a while.

The suspect, Richard Omane a resident of Koforidua who has since been re-arrested was nabbed on Monday dawn for allegedly stealing 15 bottles of frytol oil from the shop of a certain Abdul Tahiru at the Koforidua central market.

The shop owner grabbed the thief red-handed and handed him over to the Police. While on his way to the police station to seek details of the offence and arrest, the reporter saw the suspect being pursued by a certain Lance Corporal Justice and the Crime Officer, a certain Tetteh. Eventually, though, the suspect was re-arrested in the market.

“When the crime officer saw me taking the picture, he seized the mobile phone which I used to take the shot. When I followed up to the police station to recover the phone after identifying myself with my ID card, the crime officer ordered my arrest and detention,” he said.

According to the reporter, three police officers including Justice gave me slaps after accusing me of being a criminal and undermining them.

“The crime officer took me to the Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Richardson Kumeko who interrogated me and asked that I write a statement. I was granted bail after which my mobile phone was released to me.”

The reporter, peeved at the treatment meted out to him, reported the matter to the Regional Commander who has already swung into action.
