Toronto Man, 20 Arrested On Accusation That He Fills iPhone Box With Rice And Sells Them


Police have arrested and charged a Toronto man with fraud after an empty iPhone 6 box filled with rice was sold to people on Kijiji. A 20-year-old man met the suspect on Jan. 17 in the area of Islington Avenue and Dixon Road and made a cash transaction for what he believed to be an iPhone 6 in a sealed box.

He later opened the box to find no phone, but rice. According to police a 27-year-old man also met with the suspect on Feb. 6. to purchase another phone. They met in the Albion Road and Kipling Avenue area where he gave the man cash for what he believed to be an iPhone 6 in a sealed box. When the man later opened the box there was no phone but just rice.

Police believe that there may be other people who have fallen victim to the scam. Police arrested one suspect in connection to both incidents on Wednesdsay.

Gyimah Andrews Boateng, 21, of Toronto is facing two counts of fraud under $5,000, two counts of false pretence under $5,000 and two counts of breach of court order. Boateng was scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. at 2201 Finch Avenue West. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.
