Group cautions gov’t against UDS conversion

Government is far advanced with plans to convert the University for Development Studies (UDS) into three autonomous universities.

In addition to the main Nyankpala campus and the Tamale city campus, government intends converting the Wa and Navrongo campuses into self reliant universities.

Though a laudable idea, a group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Northern Region has cautioned government against any attempt to review the existing law (PNDC L. 279, 1992) that established the UDS.

A statement signed by the group’s President, Adam Mohammed Siisudeen insisted that the name University for Development Studies should remain unchanged when the the autonomy is activated.

“The convertion process should not prevent UDS from running its existing mandatory programmes and physical locations and the convention process should not in anyway negatively affect government’s support to the UDS in terms of finance, human resource and infrastructural development,” Siisudeen underscored.

Adam Siisudeen served notice that the group will take the necessary action against government if its concerns raised are ignored.
