Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia clutching his award
Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emerged the Muslim Political Personality of the Year 2016 during a maiden award ceremony to honour Muslims who have excelled in their areas of discipline.
The ceremony, which took place at the National Theatre last Friday, had important personalities from the Islamic community in attendance – the National Chief Imam Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, being the most prominent.
Imams from various parts of Accra, members of the Council of Muslim Chiefs and a host of people from the faith graced the occasion which the organizers said it intended to encourage others to emulate the good examples of the award winners.
When other nominees in the Personality of The Year category were mentioned, a deafening applause greeted Dr. Bawumia’s name. When his name was mentioned as the winner there was no surprise.
Upon receiving the award and after the deafening applause had subsided, he paid obeisance to the gathering, especially the National Chief Imam and said, “I am in politics to ensure that education is made available to all, water provided for all Ghanaians, heatlh care brought to every Ghanaian and employment given to all Ghanaians.” This was also followed by an applause of approval, especially when he saluted his wife Samira for the support she had rendered so far.
The programme – “Muslim Achievers Award” – was put together by a group, Sukura Concept, to according to it, “recognize the achievements of Muslims in Ghana and are contributing to the national development effort.”
The categories for which awards were won included the Media Personality, Sports Personality of The Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Social Activist of The Year, among others.
