Awuni Explains Policing Novelty

The Eastern Regional Police Commander DCOP Awuni Angwubutoge has described as false, reports making the rounds that he led the workers’ demonstration in Koforidua last Wednesday.

“What I did was the introduction of a novelty in the management of demonstrations in the country as a means of establishing cordial relations between the Police and its publics” he said.

Explaining what happened before and during the demonstration he said, “I told the policemen going for the demonstration duty to be civil when they set off and to avoid anything that could dent the relationship between the Police and their civilian counterparts. I added that when, after all, the taxes are reduced the benefits would come to us all since we are all workers. I added that at the end of their service they will all return to civil lives.”

The leadership of the workers, he said, applied for the service of the Police Band, a request which he said he passed on to the Headquarters for approval.

“I found in this a novelty in policing, a departure from the usual clashes between the Police and their civilian counterparts each time there is a demonstration” he said.

He found it incomprehensible that his actions and even admonitions would be subjected to a slant in a manner which hides the lessons inherent in his actions.

Continuing he said, “After the admonitions and the release of the Police Band I handed over the operations to the Municipal Police Commander Superintendent Richmond Kumako and left for the office where I monitored the demonstration. It is therefore not true that I partook in the demonstration. It is a novelty which must be continued. I am proud that nothing untoward happened. If there is another demonstration and I continue to be the regional commander here, I would do the same thing.”
